IET education brief

The IET education briefing outlines the measures we believe are vital to encouraging more young people into STEM subjects

Education and skills policy statement

STEM skills are vital for a 21st century knowledge economy, yet businesses across the UK report skills shortages. Redressing skills shortages in the engineering and technology sectors requires a robust education and skills system.

  • science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) should be given a key position in the curriculum
  • students must be taught STEM by teachers with appropriate subject qualifications
  • improving the image of STEM is extremely important, but there is no quick fix.
  • high quality careers education and guidance must be widely available so that young people have the opportunity to learn about the exciting career
