About this event
The movement of goods by sea has supported world commerce for centuries, giving rise to a need for ships to navigate safely and efficiently in all waters.
However global shipping and the movement of goods by sea have seen substantial changes during the last decade, in terms of both the sheer number and dimensions of ships in an increasingly interconnected global economy and the ever-raising public demand for adequate monitoring and surveillance of sea traffic in different areas. Also maritime security operations became priority after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001.These operations cross many geographic borders, political boundaries and legal jurisdictions, with the consequence that the traditional traffic management instruments and measures, are no longer sufficient to satisfy the needs and requirements of the maritime domain.
The talk will set the technical scenario for e-Navigation and explain the challenges being faced and the progress made to date. The expected developments in this field will be presented whilst highlighting the rationale behind the decisions already taken and their implications upon architecture.
