Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems and airport systems are rapidly evolving to meet increased efficiency, safety, security, environmental and business demands. Following the successful Symposia in past years, ESAV'11 is dedicated to provide up-to-date information to researchers, operational experts and decision makers in the world of sensors and systems development, tracking, sensor data fusion, avionics and airport operations as well as of the pertaining air traffic control procedures.

The 2011 Turing lecture
The Politecnico di Milano has hosted, in the main conference hall of the Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informazione, the buildings of electronics and computer science, the online broadcast of the annual Turing lecture. Full support has been provided by the Alumni and PhD Association of the Politecnico di Milano. Fewer people than expected attended the event, only seven among the students, plus three researchers or fellows of the University.Those who attended the event followed the discussion with undivided attention. A representative of the IET also used the laptop provided by the Politecnico di Milano to communicate, through the chat, with London and asked two questions expressed by two of the students, one of which was been replied to.

Following the learning from the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, a series of a papers were presented relating to the ever increasing use of technology in sport and sport events. The first half of the lecture looks at the use of technology in the managing of major sport events like Olympics. The second half looks at how some of modern engineering techniques are being used in Skeleton Bob Sled in the pursuit of Winter Olympic medals.
