1. Thursday 22 March 2012. Informatics Lecture (completed)

Speaker: Mr Dennis Walsh - Executive Director (Road System Operation) Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads

Subject: “Towards Enhancing Transport Outcomes: Intelligent Transport Systems”

This was a joint meeting of IET Queensland and Engineers Australia Queensland Division ITEE Branch, the 11th in the annual Informatics Lecture series. The attendance was good, largely due to the topical subject and the quality of the lecturer but also to strong IET publicity which included a “Friends” list of non- members. It was a successful event, on the subject “Towards  Enhancing Transport Outcomes: Intelligent Transport Systems”, held in EA’s Hawken Auditorium at Engineering House, Brisbane.

It  was explained how transport agencies worldwide are embracing the  application of technology to the transport tasks - this is very  necessary because of escalating growth, increased public expectation, and financial limitations. It has to be technology to the  rescue! These technologies are  delivering traditional business in new ways but also offer the potential to offer new services to  deliver better transport outcomes. Key areas of control systems are now being augmented by new information systems delivered  direct to the user. Realising these opportunities will require a new paradigm of collaboration between traditional transport  sectors, technology sectors, research sectors and increased national and international consistency. A  wide-ranging, thoughtful  and well-illustrated lecture.
