Concorde: An icon

A lecture on Concorde, organised the five IET Local Networks in the East of England at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford.

"Fantastic. Fantastic. Thoroughly enjoyed the lecture and could have sat through it twice over" - Nick Dann

"An excellent presentation by John Hutchinson, both serious and witty by turns. The full story behind the tragic crash of a Concorde at Paris was very revealing" - Barry Newton

On 1 June 2011, the five Local Networks from the East of England region, held a regional event at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford, Cambridgeshire.

The day started with free access to the Imperial War Museum itself from 10am. This meant that the aircraft enthusiasts amongst us could spend the whole day enjoying the ambience of the museum which was an ideal location for the evening lecture on Concorde.

At 6pm, those who could not make it to the museum during the day started to arrive to take advantage of the networking opportunity with members and non-members alike. At 7pm we all moved through to the lecture theatre for the main event!

Captain John Hutchinson, a retired pilot with 15 years experience flying Concorde, gave us a fantastic talk on his experiences of flying this one-of-a-kind aircraft.

Using humorous anecdotes and real-life stories, he gave the 100 strong audience a real sense of what it was like flying this amazing aircraft and described some of his unusual experiences, such as seeing two sunsets in one day!

His stories were backed up with facts and figures and he gave an in-depth account of the fateful Concorde Paris crash which led to the whole aircraft fleet being grounded permanently. The detail provided on the crash was incredible and supported by crash investigation photographs. Most of the audience couldn't believe how many contributory factors of this devastating accident had been overlooked in the media reports.

Couldn't make it to this event? Why not come along to another event hosted by one of the five East of England Local Networks:

Anglian Coastal
Beds and Herts
Cambridge
Essex
Peterborough and Huntingdon
