IET Local Networks are managed by groups of volunteers. Networks organise events to raise awareness of science, engineering and technology in their local area and promote membership of the IET. All Network events are open to the public and most are free of charge.

The major towns Dorset and South Wiltshire covers are Weymouth and Dorchester to the West, Poole and Bournemouth in the South and East, Blandford Forum in the middle, and Salisbury to the North and East of the Region. Our South and West extremity includes Bridport, to the North and West Sherborne and Shaftesbury.

Present Around The World (PATW) competition heats

The ten initial proposals for PATW 2012 (included) demonstrate a fascinating collection of presentations on an interesting range of subjects - similar high quality interest as the inaugural competition heat for the D&SW Local Network in 2011 provided; the 2011 local winner went on to win the regional final. Prior registration essential due to the location.

Record Breaking Steam Car

The world land speed record for steam-powered cars was broken for the first time in over a century on 25 August 2009, after Inspiration, a British-built car, achieved an average speed of 140 miles per hour. The talk will be delivered by project test driver Don Wales, covering the design, construction, challenges and the eventual record breaking run.
